Preservation project of the San Diego Super Computer Center

The SDSC has executed a pilot project for the Library of Congress.

Between May 2006 and October 2007, the Library of Congress (LC) and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) conducted data-transfer and storage tests.
At the heart of the project was the issue of trust, specifically how the LC could
trust SDSC to reliably store several terabytes of the LC’s data. By what means
could SDSC prove to the LC that the data was intact, preserved, and well-cared for? What tests could the LC devise, and what metrics could SDSC produce, to guarantee the integrity of their remotely stored data?

Long-term digital preservation: towards a better integration of IT and archivists

"Long-term preservation of digitally represented information (abbreviated LDP below) has been
discussed for over a decade in articles by librarians, archivists, and information scientists, an
informal group sometimes called the digital preservation community (DPC). This literature is
mostly disjoint from that of computer science, software engineering, and information technology
industry. From the perspective of an engineer accustomed to the pace of I/T research and
development, progress reported in the DPC literature is surprisingly slow."

We need more common activities. This means that archivists have to develop more skills in
IT architecture, engineering etc.

Scaling up preservation - petabyte age

... it's really amazing.
In one year, the amount of photos uploaded to Facebook equal all of the data and images collected by the Hubble space telescope. All of the videos on YouTube are nearly five times the size of the data & images collected by Hubble. And the amount of data processed by Google every 72 minutes?

interesting post from Jill Hurst's blog
