We know that Information governance is a young and immature concept which unites several disciplines which are still fragmented;
each has it's own community and strategies.

It is a real goal to bring these communities more together, in order to improve the alignment of the disciplines within a given IG project of an organization incl. the mutual understanding of these disciplines amongst their stakeholders; however it does merely make sense to replace all these IM related disciplines for the sake of a holistic super discsipline.
I guess that this is not an option by anybody in the IG community.
IG will remain an umbrella term; it serves to optimize the orchestration of IM in a given program and corp. culture.

When it comes to the difficult question of information governance implementation, I prefer the HOW. It's much more ambitious ... a real task to build and orchestrate.

especially the second trend is exactly the hard one:

Yes. "Law firm partners and attorneys are increasingly being asked by their clients to advise on proactive information governance options rather than help with reactive e-discovery actions."

...this would mean more investments in content driven IM (appraisal of information and master data, metadata, tagging etc.) instead of "garbage in garbage out" activities of uncontrolled big data.
Enterprise search and predictive coding cannot help much when the input quality of the data (description) is so poor. Automation is not yet ripe to fully replace intellectual intervention.
Professional records managers have to take a resonsibility in this orchestration.

In many organisations content or RIM driven information governance (IG) initiatives have already failed or have turned into a purely IT governance and security driven activity. Some IG roles had partially become suicide roles when it came to real time implementation.

for the time being there is little practical experience with successful content driven IM / ECM use cases.

At the ARMA 2013 annual conference (Las Vegas) the topic was omnipresent again but the perception has changed since last year in terms of a better differentiation and critical voices rising (e.g. Information governance heretics (Cunningham), panels like "The cure for IG analysis paralysis" etc...).

I have tried to summarize some lessons learned in a generic way from my three years experience in a large Pharma company.

IG is always an ambitious multi-year journey. There is no royal way or recipe and it depends heavily on the ability of an organisation to build up trust and the desirable behaviour to improve information management compliance (B. Blair).
The biggest challenges from my experience are:
- Make a clear distinction btw IT governance and information governance and bring it to life by the next point !
- Developing a realistic value proposition of IG for specific business functions (Selling IG to the business)
- No department alone is able to achieve the intended benefits and results for the enterprise (corp. culture and collaboration is crucial)

Bisher dominierte beim Thema Governance der Kontrollaspekt, Risikominimierung, Compliancesucht etc. überall wo die Peitsche oder Keule herrscht.
Im Gespräch wagen die Kontrahenten auch den Perspektivenwechsel:
wie sind strategische Anforderungen, Strukturen und Prozesse herunterzubrechen bis zum User damit die Relevanz von IG greifbar wird? Welches sind die Chancen und Opportunities die Unternehmen und Mitarbeiter befähigen neue Wertschöpfungspotentiale zu schaffen die wirklich zum Unt.erfolg beitragen? Wie können wir die Zielcommunities anders abholen? Geht es nur um Kommunikation und Sensibilisierung oder auch um Prioritätensetzung?
Gerade wegen der Consumerization der IT (BYOD, mobility etc.) kommen wir nicht mehr um das Thema herum. Dabei sollte auch der gesunde Menschenverstand spielen, wenn es um die Umsetzung und Orchestrierung der verschiedenen Stakeholder geht.
Insgesamt spannend. Es gibt jedoch keine sexy Rezepte und auch keinen Königsweg. Den muss jede Organisation selbst entwickeln.

Deidre Paknad, director of ILMG (IBM) and heading CGOC (www.cgoc.com) is explaining why we need strategies and programs to measure the value of information assets within an enterprise. If information is really considered as a corporate asset infrastructure and content must be allocated to value. It's not something unknowable but when risk and cost even exceed value firms should think about these assets and establish procedures to operationalize measurement and value creation.

An interesting article from Harry Pugh published in the german magazine "Wirtschaftsinformatik & Management" also highlights the challenges of good information governance, relating to the Info gov reference model (IGRM) of EDRM / CGOC.
Harry was a professor at numerous CGOC conferences and manging director at Citigroup Inc.

Die IT Community ist doch ab und zu noch lernfähig und beginnt langsam zu begreifen, dass es doch einen erheblichen Unterschied gibt zwischen Technologie und Information.

Wir wissen inzwischen, dass der CIO ein klassicher "misnomer" ist, denn er managt nicht die Information (bzw. den Content) sondern die Kanäle (Infrastruktur). So hat denn auch IT selbst keinen intrinsischen Wert, sondern die Wertzuschreibungen erfolgen über den entsprechenden Business zweck von Information in einem gegebenen Scope (Wertschöpfung über den Nutzenbeitrag von Information um z.B. bestimmte Entscheidungen zu fällen).
Ein Paper aus der Frankfurter School of Finance and Management versucht dem Rechnung zu tragen:
"Information-Governance umfasst die Festlegung von Entscheidungsbefugnissen und eines „Frameworks“ zur Förderung eines gezielten Umganges mit der Bewertung, Erzeugung, Speicherung, Nutzung, Archivierung und Vernichtung von
Informationen. Es umfasst Prozesse, Rollen, Metriken und Standards zur
Sicherstellung der Effektivität und Effizienz bei der Nutzung von Informationen, um die gesetzten Ziele einer Organisation bestmöglich zu erreichen."

Das Paper von Wolfgang Johannsen mit dem Titel: Information Governance - Herausforderungen in verteilten Umgebungen, .

(Information befindet sich immer in verteilten Umgebungen, dies ist bisher bloss den Content-Banausen entgangen.)

Es dämmert, dass sich Information nicht von selbst meistern lässt, sondern wesentliche Gestaltung von Seiten von Experten aus den Bereichen Lifecycle mgmt, Records mgmt und ECM bedarf. Daraus sollte man dann keinen Gegensatz konstruieren, sondern es geht nur komplementär. Das Orchester spielt mit allen Rollen, Business, IT, Legal, Governance Council, sonst tönt es nicht oder falsch. d.h. das Alignment zwischen allen Governance Stakeholdern ist die grösste Herausforderung. Sie droht oft an der Enormität der Aufgabe zu scheitern.

The university of Amsterdam has created a Research Group on Information Governance and has published articles: since 2013 the group no longer exists as it got a limited mandate.

To distinguish clearly between IT Governance and information governance is fundamental.
With the hypotheses proposed they give direction to further research that may be valuable in the field of information sciences.
