Taxonomy Boot Camp 2006 (San José, CA)
Taxonomies, classification, categorization—helping users find actionable information that is buried in today’s huge repositories of enterprise information is a vital business imperative. Built and implemented effectively, a taxonomy or categorization scheme is the secret to navigating Web sites and internal data collections, thereby ensuring that users find precise answers to their search queries.
Many people (even some Records Managers) have suggested that the purpose of classification (taxonomies) is to assist with the task of information retrieval. However, information classification may have little or nothing to do with information retrieval. In reality, the fundamental purpose of having a classification scheme is to provide the basis of making policies for managing information. A classification scheme is a conceptual structure intended to group information together into standard groupings so that policy decisions can be made about how to manage the information throughout its life cycle. A policy is a management decision made in principle, in advance. (Jeff Morelli)
