Data Governance vs. Information Governance

Gartner Analyst, Debra Logan believes that the “future" of IT lies outside the IT department. Increasingly CIOs are coming from “the business” and “users” are taking control of their own information delivery infrastructure.” By the end of 2010, Gartner predicts that 40% of people, who report directly or indirectly into IT, will have substantial business and non-IT experience”.

Paper is still prevailing

Paper still prevails according to the latest study of AIIM: "We are at last in a situation where electronic archiving of records is efficient, effective and can save huge amounts of space, and yet most office staff seem to be hanging on to paper in the mistaken view that there is some legal reason to do so," said AIIM President John Mancini, in a statement.
The survey by AIIM, an industry association representing vendors of such products, found that 62% of important documents are still archived in paper form. Even when documents are sent off to be scanned for archiving, 25% are photocopied beforehand "just in case," the survey found.

Open retention manager (Fontis)

Finally there comes a solution to manage retention schedules in a unprecedented
way:
The seamless integration and management of records series, underlying sources
(legal or other requirements) including a taxonomy based on a process oriented approach becomes true.
This metadata (above item level) can also be linked or propagated from a metalayer to corresponding instances in any system environment down to the item level. It allows an independent mgmt
of your records schedules but fits in every ERMS.

Information Governance

Information Governance is becoming a new generic term and notion to describe all corporate activities concerning information management compliance (IMC). However the challenge lies in the art of a consistent integration and consolidation of all related disciplines (strategy). This is tough and depends on each corp. culture and priorities of roadmaps. It's not easy to say here: "The whole must be more than the sum of its parts."(Aristotle)
... a lot of theory and noise in the big context of GRC (Governance Risk Mgmt and Compliance).
On the other hand there is a tendency to come down again to hard facts and first value and manage corporate data in the right way to serve the business and deliver the ROI.
like Tony Fisher's book Data Assets which is really interesting. The term "information" does merely appear here. But we can bill this story in a tangible way and the outcome is adding value and competitive strenght ....

Information Governance can encompass an endless list of topics:
- Enterprise Risk Mgmt
- IT Governance
- Cloud computing and data hosting, SOA
- Web and Enterprise 2.0, i.e., Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Yammer, Portals/Intranets, Wikis,
- Blogs, Instant Messaging, etc
- Rules of Professional Conduct/Lawyer Ethics
- Email management
- Knowledge management
- Virtualization
- SharePoint
- Managing multiple jurisdictions
- ECM: Electronic records management/electronic document management
- ILM
- Emerging technologies and trends, (Web 3.0/Semantic Web, Unified Communications, etc.)
- Conflicts of Interest/new business intake.
- Point applications being deployed which affect information governance (digital dictation, litigation support software, tax document prep software, etc.)
- eDiscovery: implications for firms and their clients
- Information security
- Web Governance
- IT risk control, business continuitiy mgmt, disaster recovery
- Computerized System Validation (Pharma)
etc.

ARMA Conference Nov. 2010: Information Governance

Information governance seems to become a new runner: the upcoming ARMA Legal Information Technology Conference in November 2010 (San Francisco) has put it on the Agenda: Call for papers - the range of topics is broad - The theme of this year's event is, "Mitigating Risk and Maximizing Revenues With Information Governance." - see:

Sharepoint and ECM / RM

Sharepoint is nothing for bean counters in IT. ... the clash of content & technology!
(maybe this is the opportunity that IT is slowly going to understand the requirements
of RM in information mgmt)

"First, we must acknowledge that SharePoint doesn't really fit any of the standard categories used to manage IT applications. It's not an ECM system in the sense of being exclusively focused on that function alone, though it can be used to manage content. It's not a search engine, though it can search across many types of content. It manages web content, but it manages lots of other content too. And finally, the straw that we always grasp at, it's a "collaboration" platform which is fuzziness itself when bean counters try to measure its ROI."

Social media: pros growing ...

An article in the Economist (31.1.2010) titled "Yammering away at the office" has fostered
some more positive aspects harnessing corporate usage of social media tools like Yammer.

"A third hurdle is that bosses are worried about allowing informal groups of workers
to spring up that managers cannot control. Yet this is precisely why the systems
are so valuable.
Often new ideas and insights—as well as warnings about potential
threats—come from informal contacts rather than from formal meetings. The
trouble is that existing IT systems are geared towards reinforcing separate silos
rather than building bridges between them."

Knowledge mgmt is not about command and control but understanding the dynamics of trust ...
