DjVu besser als PDF/A ?

I believe that DjVu meets both requirements: long-term viability and non-proprietary format

""The commercialization of DjVu is handled by Seattle-based LizardTech Inc. in partnership with AT&T Labs. DjVu is an open standard. The file format specification, as well as an open source implementations of the decoder (and part of the encoder) are available. "

I have spent some time looking at the JPG format as well but so far prefer the DjVu. As near as I can determine, both formats do basically the same thing. Compress text and line art with one compression and color and image with another. I believe the biggest difference is that DjVu uses JBIG for the text compression and JPG uses CCITT G4. Both use wavelet compression technology for color and image.

I have seen much more deployment of DjVu than I have JPG to this point, maybe because the folks are archive types they have been using it before JPG was available. Unless there is some compelling reason to change, those I have talked to at this point are intending to stay where they are at.
