8th CGOC Summit (Cambridge, MD). Feb 29 - March 1, 2012

Under the title "Improving information economics with information lifecycle governance", the CGOC summit takes place near Washington DC, in Cambridge Maryland.
see program:
https://www.cgoc.com/summit2012/program.html

Information Lifecycle Governance enables defensible disposition of unnecessary data by ensuring duties and value are tightly coupled with information assets. Under the impending weight of Big Data, defensible disposition and effective disposal of records has become a crucial challenge.

As experienced information managers we know that the tenet of information governance is tying value (intangibles) and legal duty with information assets. However the recognition and awareness of business information (content not infrastructure) as a corp. asset (intellectual capital, knowledge etc.) does not go hand in hand with the investments in IT. Moreover the business often consider IT functions and related disciplines as "plumbers" only. This is slowly changing in terms of culture as also IT is selling its services without putting the "I" into IT. Therefore Forrester has proposed since years to replace the term "IT" by the term "BI" (business information) because IT always has to serve the business which seems logic but the reality is often different, too technology oriented strategies because intangible values and information governance are harder to sell to the business than hardware and networks.
In this context Sunil Soares has written a brilliant book:
"Selling Information Governance to the Business"
(ISBN 978-1-58347-368-9 )

Get the book , it has a lot of case studies from practice from a broad range of industries. It will help you to make the business case.

In fact, "information governance will not succeed unless the business understands it, buys into it and supports it." (citation from the cover text)
Lookig forward to the CGOC summit. It's not about plumbing and plumbers.
Information economics has the concepts to demonstrate the value of business information and its role in making better decisions.
Hard to measure as we know - a long runner.
some good stuff may be found in the work of Urs Birchler and Monika Bütler (2007): Information Economics

PS: the foundation of good information governance is good data governance and mgmt.

Is the ERA project of NARA getting out of financial control?

During 2011 the Government Accountability Office has signalled several times that the ERA project (Electronic Records Archiving) - the largest ever started to preserve eRecords on a permanent basis - is getting out of budget.

The Electronic Records Archive project will cost 21% to 41% more than anticipated due to the lead agency's ineffective use of project management.

see: Information Week
nothing new so far:
Hence, IBM got a contract to build the solution now which seems to be quite strange considering the budget cuts NARA had to face for 2012.

Procter & Gamble's digital revolution

P&G wants to be the most digitally enabled company in the world
(Robert McDonald, CEO)

About the importance of data sources and master data

"It would be heretical in this company to say that data are more valuable than a brand, but it’s the data sources that help create the brand and keep it dynamic. So those data sources are incredibly important. Therefore, we go to the extreme to protect whatever consumer data we get. It’s a board-level enterprise risk-management issue for us. We have very clear firewalls between one retailer and another and strict policies—for example, about how long a “cooling off” period you need to have when working on projects with different retailers. All of this comes with our strategy of being the most digitally enabled company in the world. We can’t do that without being an industry leader on data security and privacy."

Summary of the inaugural event of the Swiss Chapter of ARMA (29.11.2011 Basel)

The child is born! ... and in a very successful way.
More than 50 participants attended the inaugural event of the Swiss Chapter of ARMA in Basel on Nov 29th.
The event had two parts: Foundation assembly and a professional conference sponsored by Oracle.
(see: http://jhagmann.twoday.net/files/Basel-ARMA/)

In the pre-conference, the general assembly (23 members) approved unanimously the bylaws, the constitution of the board (president, vice-president, treasurer) incl. 2 auditors and also voted yes to a separate membership fee for the Swiss chapter in addition to the mandatory fees for ARMA International.
Gavin Siggers, director of ARMA Europe brought a warm welcome and encouraged all present members to volunteer for future activities. ARMA Europe had strongly supported and endorsed the foundation of this first official chapter in Europe. UK will hopefully follow next.
The assembly could also welcome the vice-president of the Association of Swiss Archivists (ASA), Gregor Egloff. ARMA Switzerland has prepared a Declaration_ARMA-ASA (pdf, 40 KB)with the ASA to coordinate events and gain synergies within the records management community in Switzerland.
For 2012 we have planned 3 events:
- 23rd March - Meeting hosted by a member
- Joint Meeting with ASA / working group records mgmt in June
- 9th Nov, Annual Assembly and Conference
Since last September ARMA Switzerland has gained at least 8 new members.

After the assembly the conference part started with a short presentation of the Oracle RM solution (URM) by Peter Gobonya, account manager ECM Switzerland.
The keynote was held by Chris Walker (Oracle) about the myth of unstructered information
(see his blog)
The second presentation was given by Uli Zipfel, RM Program Manager at Roche about their approach to manage unstructured content throughout the lifecycle (office, mail and sharepoint).
The presentations will be loaded on the ARMA Europe site as soon as available - http://europe.arma.org/

Do also use the group ARMA Europe on LinkedIn. (registration required)
