Farewell to Governance?
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/1022629464/
A blog comment argues with a particular focus on the negative impact of governance in the sense of "more bureaucracy & compliance".

http://www.cmswire.com/digital-workplace/goodbye-governance-we-dont-need-you-any-more/

Governance should not be seen as a top down one way initiative (often suggested by the governance notion) but a combination of bottom-up and top down when it comes to implementation: finally it's the ability of an orchestration of all stakeholders of an IG program to achieve the expected results.
Governance has to do with legitimacy (democracy) by continuous negotiation and open communication btw the roles which are involved.
Confusing information governance ? (AIIM, IGI)
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/1022532040/
Information Governance is one of the most misunderstood terms in the business of information management. It's NOT just a fancy replacement for Records Management. Use these best practice resources to learn how to manage ALL types of information, not just records. And transform your information into assets and insights for competitive advantage.
Information governance competency domains (ARMA - DACUM chart)
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/1022462812/
Most of you know about the IGP certification
http://www.arma.org/r2/igp-certification
but few are aware of what the required skills and competencies are.

There is a useful chart called DACUM (....)

DACUM stands for Developing a Curriculum

"Developing a Curriculum (DACUM) is a process that incorporates the use of a focus group in a facilitated storyboarding process to capture the major duties and related tasks included in an occupation, as well as, the necessary knowledge, skills, and traits. This cost-effective method provides a quick and thorough analysis of any job"
http://facilitation.eku.edu/what-developing-curriculum-dacum

http://www.dacum.org/

For IGP and info governance topics:
the chart (see link below) lists all these Tasks and duties together with the related and required knowledge, skills and tools required for information governance (IG) professional.

6 IG competency domains:
http://www.arma.org/r2/igp-certification/domains

direct Link to DACUM chart:
http://www.arma.org/docs/igp/dacumchart1012.pdf

However: all this seems quite US-centric and we all know that the real life in a European environment looks different.

What matters?
Most IG initiatives just prescribe behaviour through standards, policies, roles, change control etc. this mostly fails to engage nor excite staff. instead ....
Start asking what is the data use of employees, dependencies, flows etc. which makes them invested and truly part for the governance community. When engaging with users start using data flow tools which support their business processes.

Information Governance issues: barriers & pitfalls
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/1022384049/
During November / December 2014 I gave two presentations (german & english) why Information governance is so hard to implement, why it does hardly work and why the top down only approach is no solution.

german: Records Mgmt Fachtag Frankfurt M. : 25. Nov. 2014
RMFT-20141125-ge (pdf, 2,053 KB)

english: ARMA annual conference of the Swiss Chapter 5. Dec. 2014
Preso-ARMA-CH-Dez-15 (pdf, 2,748 KB)

In the meantime AIIM has published its paper:
It's not information governance, it's information opportunity (...)

There you may find numerous arguments why IG is lurching from crisis to crisis in terms of implementation .
However the reproach that the records mgmt community has hijacked IG is purely semantics. ... part of the hidden struggle btw AIIM and ARMA. (?)

In theory Paul Strassmann has set the standards more than 10 years ago by the masterwork "Governance of information management. The concept of an information constitution" (out of print)
http://bit.ly/1zO86KO (Wayback machine)
or
http://www.infoeconomics.com/digital/show-ebook.php?id=3
(why is he not cited anymore?)
... this perception is almost ignored in the actual debates.
It's all about politics ...(and corp. culture)

Therefore the KRM is coming up with a new IG methodology (MATRIO ®) derived from the Matrioschka model where given structures may be built up from the bottom combined with a top down policy making step by step (shell by shell).
Information Governance Leitfaden 2015 / Subskription
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/1022374542/

Info Governance initiative
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/752349879/
The team around Jason Baron (ex-head of litigation at NARA) and Barclay Blair has started a lot of initiatives to foster IG on several levels.
It's the very IG thinktank currently.
The fragmented information governance communities
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/752349872/
We know that Information governance is a young and immature concept which unites several disciplines which are still fragmented;
each has it's own community and strategies.

see: http://www.infogovcon.com/blog/entry/the-fragmented-communities-of-information-governance

It is a real goal to bring these communities more together, in order to improve the alignment of the disciplines within a given IG project of an organization incl. the mutual understanding of these disciplines amongst their stakeholders; however it does merely make sense to replace all these IM related disciplines for the sake of a holistic super discsipline.
I guess that this is not an option by anybody in the IG community.
IG will remain an umbrella term; it serves to optimize the orchestration of IM in a given program and corp. culture.

IM predictions (Parapadakis)
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/714912108/
my colleague has published interesting thoughts about the future of Information Mgmt.

http://4most.wordpress.com/2014/01/30/2020-predictions/

BYOD is a temporary aberration etc.

the IT organization becomes irrelevant ...again since years .
what we heard from Nicolas Carr in 2003 "IT doesn't matter"
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Carr

http://www.nicholascarr.com/?page_id=99

Another one should be the myth that information is a corp. asset.

Look at information governance budgets; everywhere, content driven initiatives and programs are being eliminated; pushed back to the business; who cares?
again: Barclay Blair (2012), so true ...
Disruptive disruptions ...
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/714906332/
The term "disruption" or "disruptive" is quite inflationary for the moment .

allbeit IT or collaboration - Clay Shirky: http://bit.ly/1crXRXo, processes, behavior etc.
C. McKinnon has written a nice article: http://bit.ly/1ibMFAD
Rethinking IM in the age of digital disruption; ....
everything is breaking in an extremely disruptive world: continuity seems to be out. Building trust in a disruptive age? - no more possible.

Bill Jensen (Simplicity) came up with a simple reader and a call to DISRUPT! BE EPIC AND THINK EPIC (25 successful habits about anything goes)
http://disruptmovement.com/

What for?

In the guiding principles for instance (p.148) it is suggested that HOW is the wrong question. Instead all about WHY is most important .

This is exactly the opposite of the core message of Dov Seidman's HOW book.
HOW we do anything means everything.
http://www.howistheanswer.com/

When it comes to the difficult question of information governance implementation, I prefer the HOW. It's much more ambitious ... a real task to build and orchestrate.

Proactive information governance - insights from Legal Tech NY 2014
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/706563859/
As stated in my last article in the Records Mgmt Journal (http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/600001224/)
one of the most difficult challenges in IG implementation is to develop a sustainable value proposition for specific business functions.

Top 10 Information Governance trends discovered during Legal Tech NY 2014 seem to confirm this!
especially the second trend is exactly the hard one:
" ....only benefits/value consideration would be able to sustain an IG program designed to take control of your information."

How true! excellent statement.

see:
http://animeshkum.wordpress.com/2014/02/10/top-10-ig-trends-ltny2014/

Yes. "Law firm partners and attorneys are increasingly being asked by their clients to advise on proactive information governance options rather than help with reactive e-discovery actions."

...this would mean more investments in content driven IM (appraisal of information and master data, metadata, tagging etc.) instead of "garbage in garbage out" activities of uncontrolled big data.
Enterprise search and predictive coding cannot help much when the input quality of the data (description) is so poor. Automation is not yet ripe to fully replace intellectual intervention.
Professional records managers have to take a resonsibility in this orchestration.

Information governance - beyond the buzz (RMJ)
http://jhagmann.twoday.net/stories/600001224/
In many organisations content or RIM driven information governance (IG) initiatives have already failed or have turned into a purely IT governance and security driven activity. Some IG roles had partially become suicide roles when it came to real time implementation.

for the time being there is little practical experience with successful content driven IM / ECM use cases.

At the ARMA 2013 annual conference (Las Vegas) the topic was omnipresent again but the perception has changed since last year in terms of a better differentiation and critical voices rising (e.g. Information governance heretics (Cunningham), panels like "The cure for IG analysis paralysis" etc...).

I have tried to summarize some lessons learned in a generic way from my three years experience in a large Pharma company.

Records Management Journal, Vol. 23 Issue: 3, pp.228 - 240.
Information governance - beyond the buzz

see abstract: http://t.co/1ZFsiUZnq2

Fulltext download with Emerald.

IG is always an ambitious multi-year journey. There is no royal way or recipe and it depends heavily on the ability of an organisation to build up trust and the desirable behaviour to improve information management compliance (B. Blair).
The biggest challenges from my experience are:
- Make a clear distinction btw IT governance and information governance and bring it to life by the next point !
- Developing a realistic value proposition of IG for specific business functions (Selling IG to the business)
- No department alone is able to achieve the intended benefits and results for the enterprise (corp. culture and collaboration is crucial)
