Are Information Managers Confused About Information Lifecycle Management?

A survey by AIIM, the content management association, has shown that 23% of IT Managers and Information Managers are not familiar with the term Information Lifecycle Management and only 39% understand its importance in relation to long-term records storage.

The survey also found that only 19% archive their e-mails as records. Some 50% rely on the standard back-ups and a surprising 22% do not archive their e-mail at all.

Compliance Costs Affect Funding for E-Records Management

In a recent article in Line56, Colman Murphy of Xerox points out an important truth about the spike in compliance-oriented projects: "Amidst all this spending, funding for electronic records management (ERM) initiatives has lagged." Many companies are following the letter of laws like Sarbanes-Oxley, but still failing to implement any reasonable semblance of a true records management program.

Specifications, Certifications, and Compliance: There is a Difference

Certifications are more than specifications

Some people co-equate specifications and certifications, but in fact, certifications go beyond defining a standard or set of specifications. Certification bodies use specifications as a set of criteria for testing and qualifying vendors and other parties as compliant with the set of defined specifications. Certification implies both a rigorous set of specifications together with a rigorous testing procedure and set process for demonstrating a product's worthiness to be certified.

The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) recently awarded a $308 million contract to develop and deploy a multi-petabyte Electronic Records Archives (ERA) system to a team led by Lockheed Martin. FileTek, Inc., a data access and management software provider, will serve as a subcontractor on this ERA project.
